As someone who has experimented with virtually every hair color (except green), I can tell you that the shampoos and conditioners you use on colored hair make a huge difference.
When you spend money to change the color of your hair, you want that new color to last. Unfortunately, there are all sorts of natural (like the sun) and unnatural (like chlorine) factors that can suck the dye right out of your hair and leave it looking faded and unhealthy.
TRESemmé Color Revitalize Shampoo
Shampoos for colored hair tend to be expensive, but you can get this one for less than $10.
TRESemmé offers a gentle formula that protects color while adequately cleaning the hair. This effective formula utilizes “advanced color vibrancy technology” to protect color and replenish moisture.
- Green tea
This product is designed for daily use, but we recommend shampooing less frequently to protect hair color.
Shampoos designed to protect color tend to be pricey – sometimes as high as $80 or more. You simply can’t beat TRESemmé when it comes to price.
Users agree TRESemmé effectively protects color while moisturizing hair. This product is great for dry skin, dry hair, and/or damaged hair.
The bottle is large (28 oz) and you don’t need much product to get the job done. The main downside to this product is that it does contain sulfates.
TRESemmé Color Revitalize Conditioner
The TRESemmé shampoo reviewed above is designed to work with its companion product – TRESemmé Color Revitalize Conditioner.
Featuring the same “color vibrancy technology” and many of the same ingredients, this conditioner focuses on replenishing moisture while protecting color – no matter the shade.
TRESemmé conditioner leaves hair soft, manageable, and healthy. Like the shampoo, the conditioner comes in a 28 oz bottle for less than $10.
Instructions recommend leaving the conditioner in the hair for 2-3 minutes while showering.
TRESemmé Color Revitalize Conditioner does not contain sulfates.
Coloring treatments can make hair brittle and tangled. That’s where TRESemmé conditioner comes in. Users agree this product effectively removes tangles (better than more expensive brands) and helps to repair damaged hair.
The conditioner has a pleasant scent and does not leave any residue.
TRESemmé is not a miracle product but it does deliver what it promises – smoothness, shine, and increased thickness – for an unbeatable price.
The TRESemmé Color Revitalize System is also an appropriate choice for men and women who do not color their hair.
Pantene Pro-V Expert Collection Agedefy Shampoo
While some young people are dying their hair silver as part of the “granny trend,” some of us actually want to hide those annoying grey hairs.
Pantene’s Pro-V Expert Collection can help. This unique shampoo was designed with a “triple blend complex” that promises to address the “seven signs” of hair aging:
- Split ends
- Unruly greys
- Lackluster hue
Pantene insists this product will make your hair feel up to ten years younger and recommends that it be used with the matching conditioner and thickening treatment (more on these products below).
This gentle formula is safe for daily use on dyed/bleached hair, but again we recommend washing only two-three times per week to extend your color.
Ingredients include caffeine and pro-vitamins to restore luster and bounce. You can find Pantene’s shampoo on Amazon for $10 (10.1 oz).
Users agree that Pantene’s shampoo makes aging hair look and feel thicker. This product provides an almost conditioner-like defense against tangles as well as increased shine and softness without that uncomfortable silicone feeling you get from some products.
Pantene’s shampoo has a pleasant scent and does not leave residue. Users with unruly grey hairs agree that this shampoo makes those hairs easier to hide and control.
This product does contain sulfates and may dry out your hair. Users recommend using Pantene’s conditioner and thickening treatment to restore moisture.
*Pantene may not be the best choice for individuals with sensitive skin.
Pantene Pro-V Expert Collection Agedefy Conditioner
Like the shampoo, the second step in Pantene’s age defying system includes similar ingredients and promises to fight the same “seven signs” of hair aging.
This conditioner focuses on hydration and resilience against split ends and breakage.
For even more fullness, the manufacturer recommends Pantene Pro-V Expert Collection AgeDefy Advanced Thickening Treatment, a spray formula designed to be used a few times per week in addition to the shampoo and conditioner for best results.
Pantene’s conditioner has a pleasant scent that is appropriate for men and women. It does not contain sulfates. Get it for just $6.29 on Amazon (8.4 oz).
Whether it’s age, climate, medication, or color that has damaged your hair, Pantene’s formula is an effective and inexpensive way to treat it.
A few things users noticed after using Pantene’s conditioner:
- Less hair in the brush after combing
- Does not make hair look greasy
- Does not cause tangles
- Controls fly-aways and frizz
- Increased body and softness
Users advise leaving this thick conditioner in for 2-3 minutes before washing.
Should you use the thickening treatment?
Some users swear by the third step in Pantene’s age-defying process, while others argue that the spray just makes their hair sticky (you can purchase this product on Amazon for $5.24 (4.2 oz).
Pantene boasts that the thickening spray will make you look and feel like as if you had more than 6,000 extra strands. A great remedy for limp hair, this spray contains panthenol, vitamin B3, and caffeine. This product has a “clean” scent and does not contain sulfates or silicone.
My recommendation: I would try the shampoo and conditioner first (for a few weeks), and then go back to purchase the thickening treatment if you desire extra fullness and control.
Both TRESemmé and Pantene offer quality products that are safe for use on bleached or dyed hair. Pantene’s collection features smaller bottles, but both collections are inexpensive when compared to similar brands.
Both products seem to be similar expect for the fact that Pantene specifically addresses aging.
I would recommend the first product for younger men and women with colored hair (and anyone with sensitive skin) and the second product for men and women starting to experience signs of aging – whether or not they have color-treated hair.
If I had to make an overall decision I would recommend the TRESemmé products over the Pantene products.
