Oh, the woes of aging! Skincare brands are making a fortune on all the products out there aimed to erase and eliminate, firm, tighten, and brighten – but which ones really work? The eyes are possibly the worst area when it comes to premature aging: dark circles, puffiness, redness, wrinkles … you name it. With all the eye creams out there, it can be hard to decide which one to buy. Keep reading for a detailed review of three popular eye creams.
Obagi ELASTIderm Eye Treatment Cream
Founded in 1988, Obagi Medical Products, Inc. is a pharmaceutical company devoted to anti-aging. This brand provides excellent products for all skin types that are designed to lessen the appearance of premature aging. The vast array of Obagi products can be found online, in spas, and via professionals.
The product we’re concerned about is part of the ELASTIderm line, a collection made up of three products that aim to firm up the eye area for a younger, more resilient look. In addition to firming, Eye Treatment Cream also smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. Specifically, ELASTIderm treats:
- “Crepey” skin
- Free radical damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
Authorized retailer DermStore.com sells this eye cream (half ounce) for $112, but you can purchase it on Amazon for just $66.20. The Obagi formula is a medical grade combination of malonic acid and a bi-mineral complex, more specifically Vitamin E, dimethicone, titanium dioxide, and antioxidants. In other words, Obagi utilizes a “restorative elasticity complex” to achieve real results with ingredients that boost your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.
Instructions say to apply morning and night to the entire eye area including the eyelids and corners. Obagi specialists recommend washing the face, applying toner, and then dabbing on the eye treatment cream. After letting it soak in for a few minutes, apply a gentle moisturizer. If going outside, finish the process with a facial sunscreen.
Customer Review: 5/5
Obagi’s smooth formula goes on effortlessly. It really works to make the area around your eyes look years younger. Customers noticed positive results in as little as a few weeks of daily use. The price is fair for the amount you get and one jar lasts up to 6 months. This cream works well for individuals with sensitive skin and can be used by both men and women.
The downside? You can’t wear it under makeup. Some women noticed that ELASTIderm had a drying effect that made concealer look terrible (maybe this is why Obagi’s instuctions call for a moisturizer).
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream
The second eye cream is brought to you by the common drugstore brand Neutrogena. You can find Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream for sale on Amazon for $18.28. Ulta.com sells it for $21.99.
Rapid Wrinkle Repair utilizes accelerated retinol SA combined with hyaluronic acid and a glucose complex to fade wrinkles, brighten the area beneath the eyes, and promote even skin texture. Neutrogena claims that users will see results in just one week and that the cream continues to moisturize all day long.
Instructions advise to wash the face before applying a small amount of Rapid Wrinkle Repair to the entire eye area. Pat the liquid into the skin. Wait a few minutes before applying makeup.
Customer Review: 4/5
Men and women reported that their faces looked and felt great all day long after the morning use of Neutrogena’s eye cream. For best results, customers recommend pairing this product with other Neutrogena eye products. A few customers experienced itchiness along with worsening symptoms; others noticed nothing.
Positive results were noticed after about 2 weeks for most users. Comments include:
- Reduction in the appearance of crow’s feet
- Good for sensitive skin
- Reduced puffiness
- Good for dry skin
- Lightens under eye area
- Works to lift under eye wrinkles/ baggy eyes
- Good for oily skin
RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream
Dr. Jean-Charles Lissarrague, a French pharmacist, founded RoC Skincare in 1957. He named the brand after the pharmacy where he invented most of his formulas: Roge Cavailles. Lissarrague became famous when he developed personalized skincare formulas for French actresses.
RoC goes for $15.48 on Amazon and $22.99 on the RoC official website. Active ingredients include an exclusive form of retinol and an essential mineral complex. The formula was developed for the sensitive eye area and is smooth, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic (more about retinol here).
Expect to see a reduction of puffiness and a lightening of dark circles after 4 weeks of use. Expect to see an effect on wrinkles after about 12 weeks of use. RoC advises users to combine this product with others from the Correxion collection: Deep Wrinkle Daily moisturizer with SPF 30, Deep Wrinkle Serum, and Deep Wrinkle Night Cream
Instructions say to apply the formula in the morning around the eye area by dabbing gently. Wait a few minutes before applying makeup. The company warns that users may experience tingling or redness. This is normal and shouldn’t last long.
Customer Review: 4/5
The Correxion formula works for all skin types and can even be used by individuals suffering from rosacea (learn more about treating rosacea). Although it takes about 2-3 months for users to notice results, the results are great when they appear. RoC works wonders on dark under eye circles
The biggest issue with Correxion is that every once in awhile, a user develops an adverse reaction to this product including swelling and bruising.
The three creams reviewed above have similar goals but very different formulas. According to customer reviews, the Obagi cream stands out as a clear winner, but can’t be worn under makeup. It’s also a little pricey. However, I would still recommend this product over the other two if you can afford it.
Second place goes to Neutrogena. This is a brand that is known for gentle formulas that work for all skin types and according to reviews this is true of the Rapid Wrinkle Repair cream. With it’s fancy French name, the third product might sound classy, but there is a chance of irritation and for best results the company recommends combining the cream with 3 other products, which significantly drives up the price. My recommendation is to splurge on Obagi unless wearing makeup is a must.
