Nothing is quite as discouraging as slow-growing or thinning hair. Each shampoo and dye commercial on the television seems like a slap in the face. Print advertising seems to rely singularly on the awe and wonder inspired by long, silky tresses. For this reason, many men and women turn to shampoo for growing hair to assist stubborn locks that are, seemingly, determined to remain short and shoulder-length, or to fall out altogether. There are a number of issues causing hair loss and growth retardation, including poor diet, genetic coding, poor circulation, and clogged follicles. The best hair growth shampoos seek to reverse many of these, leading to longer (and longer-lasting), fuller hair.

Phytoworx Organic Hair Revovery Shampoo Review
While Ultrax shampoo relied heavily upon caffeine to stimulate growth, Phytoworx places greater emphasis on plant stem cells and essential oils. Plant stem cells are, reportedly, excellent to stimulate the reproduction of hair in follicles long thought dead or ineffective, resulting in the ability to prevent hair fall.
Essential oils included in the shampoo are also reported to stimulate increased growth and circulation through healing scalp conditions, including the over-production of testosterone (and, consequently, DHT) and clogged follicles. The shampoo also includes tea tree oil, peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary, all oils with clinical trials suggesting significance in the treatment of hair loss or slow-growing hair.
By and large, customers expressed delight with this product. The greatest source of joy was regarding the shampoo’s ingredients; rather than having to worry over a long list of unpronounceable ingredients, customers were pleased to find the shampoo’s ingredients wholly organic and safe. Apart from this, customers expressed satisfaction in the overall effectiveness of the shampoo’s growth promises, as most saw significant improvement (visible “baby” hairs growing in, and thickening of existing hair) within only two-three weeks of use. Many thought this was the best shampoo for thinning hair. Customers were also pleased with the product’s smell and texture, noting that it left hair feeling smooth and refreshed, without extensive drying or over-hydrating.
Again, although the majority of customers expressed satisfaction with the product, some were not quite so fortunate in their experiences with Phytoworx. While some simply did not see any improvement, others found that the shampoo also had too drying an effect on their scalp, resulting in discontinued use. Others found that, while the shampoo did thicken existing hair, little to no new growth was visible. Finally, other reviewers were displeased with the product’s consistency; unlike typical shampoos, Phytoworx does not lather, but remains as something more akin to a liquid or an oil. Some customers were uncomfortable with this change in texture, and felt the shampoo, despite some results, was not worth the texture change.
Ultrax Labs Growth Stimulating Shampoo Review
Ultrax Labs Growth Stimulating Shampoo derives the majority of its effectiveness from caffeine. Caffeine is included in the shampoo’s mixture in order to prompt a growth response in the scalp’s follicles by stimulating them directly. The hair-thickening shampoo also contains ketoconazole, a synthetic antifungal intended to repair any fungal or bacterial causes of dandruff or poor scalp health. The shampoo’s final hair-loss-targeted ingredient is saw palmetto, a compound with trials suggesting it blocks an enzyme known to cause continual loss.
Ultrax Labs’ shampoo makes hefty claims for individuals seeking regrowth—claims that many people’s experience wholeheartedly supports. One such reviewer noticed a marked different in growth in only 30 days, and saw both a significant increase in overall growth and a quickening in the new growth. Other users saw results in as little as two weeks. One of the most common pleasant surprises came from the shampoo’s scent; while many hair growth shampoos possess a strange or chemical smell, users saw that this shampoo contained only a standard, muted scent and did not cause nostril upset.
Some users saw the shampoo as an effective source of regrowth, but were displeased with the shampoo’s drying effects. Though some were able combat this with conditioner, others found that their scalps were far too dry during continued use and were unwilling to proceed. Still other users found an actual increase in hair loss, primarily found in the shower after cleaning. Although these users seem to be in the minority, some hair types may not react well to the shampoo ingredients. Before continual use, then, perhaps test the shampoo over a period of several days to ensure no adverse reaction occurs.
Nioxin Cleanser Review
Nioxin Cleanser is a shampoo fortified with vitamins and minerals and accompanied by sulfates. Nioxin is designed primarily to block excess production of testosterone, which leads to the production of DHT, a substance linked to hair loss. While the cleanser does function as a shampoo, its main purpose is to rearrange the topical composition of the scalp in order to promote growth and thickening. This particular cleanser is part of a multi-step system, and can be used as a part of this system, or it can be used alone to combat hair loss.
Customers expressed satisfaction with this product as a means of halting loss. While most reviewers did not see a marked difference in new growth, the majority of customers saw a significant decrease in loss, a boost in the health and vitality of existing hair, and an increase in their overall appearance, making this an ideal volumizing treatment. Most saw a distinct difference in as little as two weeks, and many have used the product faithfully for several years. Many used this product following a hairstylist or doctor’s recommendation for fuller, healthier locks.
Naturally, although many consumers found Nioxin helpful for their woes, others remained unconvinced: long-time users noted that some of the ingredients had changed, leading to a less effective product. While Nioxin continued to work well to halt loss for some, it failed to do so adequately, resulting in the change to a different product.

And the Verdict Is…
Taking into account actual product ingredients and customers reviews, Phytoworx is likely to provide new consumers with a high-quality product at an affordable price. Although the other two products are effective enough, Phytoworx is the only product able to promise organic, all-natural ingredients, free from synthetic chemicals and toxins. This may not mean much to some, but most individuals lean toward being health-conscious in all aspects, including products that are applied topically. As a shampoo, Phytoworx provides a boost in growth without using potentially harmful or misunderstood ingredients. Everything considered, this product appears to be the best shampoo for hair loss & thinning hair.

Other Treatment Options to Consider
Minoxidil was discovered in the 1980s. While being tested for other purposes, scientists noticed the drug’s mysterious power to regrow hair. Scientifically speaking, Minoxidil is an antihypertensive vasodilator. The drug has been proven to slow and/or stop the loss of hair and has been known to promote regrowth in some cases. Minoxidil is an over-the-counter medication most often used by those suffering from the most common cause of baldness: androgenic alopecia (AKA male pattern baldness). Applied directly to the scalp twice per day, this medication is FDA-approved and appropriate for use by both men and women.
Minoxidil is one of the most effective drugs of its kind. Nearly 50% of men notice regrowth after 3-6 months of use; 60% of male users notice a 10-12% increase in hair density.
Unfortunately, use must be continued indefinitely to prevent further hair loss. Minoxidil products designed for men typically include a 5% concentration solution (2% for women).
How it Works
Although not completely understood, Minoxidil works in part by stimulating hair follicles to promote growth. The drug does not reduce DHT or 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme that leads to DHT buildup around hair follicles).
Minoxidil actually widens the hair follicles, making room for thicker strands of hair. The drug also extends the anagen stage (a division of the hair growth process), which results not only in more individual hairs, but longer hair as well.
Common side effects
- Burning/irritated eyes
- Redness/itching/irritation on scalp
- Hair growth in other places on the body
- In some cases, hair loss worsened
Serious (rare) side effects
- Allergic reaction
- Chest pain
- Tachycardia (increased heart beat)
- Weight gain
- Swelling of the hands/feet
Note: You may notice an increase in “shedding” shortly after starting treatment. This is a normal side effect. Don’t worry, the hair loss is temporary.
Rogaine is probably the most recognizable Minoxidil product for men. You can purchase a 1-month supply on Amazon for $12. The product comes in foam form and is easy to use. More details:
- 5% Minoxidil concentration
- Dries quickly
- Results in 4 months or less
Reviews on Rogaine are split. Although a highly-rated product, it seems that Minoxidil does not work on at least 15% of the male population. If it works, it works well – as long as you follow instructions. If it doesn’t work, however, you will most likely lose more hair. And it won’t grow back.
Lipogaine for Women
This Minoxidil product for women is available on Amazon for just $20. The formula includes a 2% concentration of Minoxidil along with biotin, niacin, and a herbal blend said to decrease DHT. Just like the previous product, Lipogaine is applied topically twice per day.
Lipogaine has much better reviews than both Rogaine and Rogaine for Women. Users noticed fuller, healthier hair along with the addition of new “baby hairs.”
“I first saw a bald spot on my head about one year back and it was really depressing.” writes one reviewer. “For me this is the only product that works. I have used many products with Minoxidil but none of them did anything for me like Lipogaine.”
Note: There is a slight risk of eyelid dermatitis with use of this product. Use is not recommended for women with sensitive eyes.
Propecia is Merck & Co.’s generic name for Finasteride, a drug temporarily banned from 2005-2009 after a German scientist discovered it could hide steroid abuse. Finasteride is FDA approved for treatment of MPB (male pattern baldness). Propecia is approved for use by men only. The typical result is a 30% decrease in hair loss after 6 months of daily treatment. Like Minoxidil, one must continue to use this product indefinitely to maintain improvement.
Propecia has been shown to work only on the anterior and vertex sections of the head (middle front and top). Those with hair loss at the temples should try a different product.
According to a 5-year study, 90% of participants noticed favorable results after 3-12 months of daily use. The drug had no effect on the other 10%.
How it Works
The drug works by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that transforms testosterone into DHT. In blocking the production of DHT, Finasteride limits androgen activity. Propecia includes 1mg of Finasteride and is taken daily in pill form.
Propecia is available by prescription only and is the only FDA approved pill for hair loss treatment.
Common side effects
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low sex drive
- Decrease in amount of semen
- Ejaculation disorder
- In rare cases, permanent sexual dysfunction
Note: There may be a relationship between this drug and certain cancers including breast cancer
The price of Propecia varies depending on pharmacy and brand, but you can expect to pay between $150 and $280 for a 90-day supply. This review does a good job of summing up the overall consumer opinion of this product:
“I started losing hair as young as 23. A competing product didn’t work for me at all. Then I switched to Propecia and started getting good results after about 6 months. My hairline has remained more or less the same after 7 years. This product definitely works. The only thing is that it is rather costly and reduces one’s sex drive somewhat.”
In other words, Propecia is not as well known as Rogaine, but seems to work better. It’s more expensive than the first product and the potential side effects scare away many potential customers (in reality, only 2% of users experience sexual problems; in most cases, the issues disappear when medication is stopped).
Here’s another review:
“I am 31 this year and have been taking Propecia for about 3 years now. It has delivered great results, really slowing down my hair loss. A welcome ‘side-effect’ is that it blocks DHT which is great because I take a lot of bodybuilding supplements and this prevents the prostate from becoming enlarged.”

Hair Transplantation Surgery
With enough money and determination, some men and women turn to a more serious, but more likely successful option to solve their hair thinning or balding woes: surgery.
Hair transplantation surgery began in the 1950s. The process is similar to that of a skin graft. A narrow strip of hair-bearing skin (3-4 inches) is removed from the back of the scalp and transplanted to an area with little-to-no hair. The wound is sewn shut and is usually hidden by nearby hair.
The strip of removed skin is divided into thousands of tiny pieces, each containing just a few hairs. The surgeon then cleans and numbs the thinning/bald area and creates tiny holes/slits in which he will place the tiny grafts. Depending on the amount of skin transplanted, the surgery will last between 4 and 8 hours. Most hair transplant surgeries are performed under local anesthesia in a doctor’s office.
Your scalp will be sore for several days after surgery and will need to be covered with a surgical dressing. You may be prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, or painkillers. Most patients return to work in less than a week.
The transplanted hair will fall out a few weeks later. New growth will be noticeable in 3 months or less. Within 6-9 months, most patients have experience 60% of new hair growth. The cost of hair transplantation surgery ranges from $4,000 to $15,000 depending on the amount of skin removed – and you can assume it won’t be covered by your insurance.
- Hair growth may appear unnatural
- Folliculitis (irritation of hair follicles)
- Shock loss (sudden, temporary loss of transplanted hair)
