Pimples and blemishes are most common during our teens, but some people continue to struggle with acne into their adult years. Most people will experience occasional pimples throughout their lives.
Below, we will discuss various home home remedies for pimples and acne, including solutions for people with sensitive and oily skin.
Acne has two main causes:
- A buildup of dead skin cells and sebum (oil) that clogs up pores.
Although you may think that harsh chemicals are the best way to eradicate acne, this usually isn’t the case. The chemicals in many acne products can actually make things worse.
Natural remedies are a better way to reduce the appearance of current acne and to prevent future breakouts. Plus, you’ll save money.
Homemade acne mask with orange peel
Orange peel fights acne with vitamin C, citric acid, and its astringent properties.
All you’ll need to make this mask is 2 fresh orange peels and some clean water. Use a blender or mortar and pestle to grind up the orange peels. Add just enough water to make a paste.
Apply the paste to your face and let sit for 25 minutes (the mask should be firm). Rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry with a towel. Follow up with moisturizer.
Lighten scars and kill bacteria with cinnamon and honey
Cinnamon stops bacteria from spreading with its antimicrobial properties. Honey is a naturally occurring antibiotic that can wipe out acne-causing bacteria. These two ingredients also have anti-inflammatory properties that can lighten acne scars.
Mix 1 teaspoon cinnamon with 2 tablespoons honey. Blend until the mixture has formed a paste. Apply the mixture to clean, dry skin and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry with a towel. Follow up with moisturizer.
Bentonite clay – a face mask for acne and blackheads
Blackheads and whiteheads form when your pores get clogged up with dead skin cells and excess sebum (oil). The only difference between the two is that if you see a black spot, it means the pore is open. If you see a white spot, the pore is still closed and the plug of skin cells/sebum hasn’t come into contact with the air.
Excessive scrubbing can make the condition worse. We recommend trying Bentonite clay, a mineral-rich substance that has been used for centuries to heal a variety of skin-related ailments.
Bentonite clay does a great job of pulling out the grit and oil clogging up your pores. It also provides your skin with healthy minerals and promotes circulation. You can make the following mask using apple cider vinegar or water.
Mix 1 tablespoon bentonite clay with enough water or apple cider vinegar to form a thick paste. Apply to clean, dry skin and let sit until the mask is mostly dry (should take about 20 minutes). Rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry with a towel. Follow up with moisturizer.
Clear face naturally with avocado & honey
Start by scraping out the inside of an avocado and mashing it in a bowl. Stir in 1 tablespoon honey until the mixture forms a paste. Apply the mixture to clean, dry skin and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry with a towel. Follow up with moisturizer.
*This is a great option for people with sensitive skin.
Egg white mask for oily skin
Oily skin can be caused by factors like diet, genetics, stress, and hormone changes.
Egg whites are rich in proteins and vitamin A. They can help tighten up your skin and improve tone. Simply whip up one egg white until it stiffens. Spread it onto your face and let sit until it dries. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat face dry with a towel. Follow up with moisturizer. Repeat twice per week for best results.
You can also make this mask with one egg white and the juice from half a lemon. This combination will tighten the skin and help soak up excess sebum (oil).
Home remedies for acne scars
You may already know this, but lemon is a natural bleach and skin lightening agent. It also includes vitamin C, which helps your body rebuild the collagen in your skin.
The acid in lemon juice can help fade scars and freckles. It can also help reduce swelling associated with pimples. Be sure to limit sun exposure while you’re using lemon juice on the skin, as it can cause dark spots to form.
Squeeze the juice from 1 lemon into a small bowl. Add a drop of honey and stir. Use a cotton ball to apply the juice directly to your scars. Let sit for 10 minutes and then rinse. Repeat daily for 2-3 weeks.
If you have very sensitive skin, dilute the mixture by mixing in water.
Mix the following to create a mask: 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon almond oil, 1 tablespoon honey, and 2 tablespoons milk.
Apply mixture to scars each day for 7-10 days. Remember to minimize sun exposure when using bleaching agents.
A note about sensitive skin

- Citrus juices
- Coarse ground salt
- Baking soda
- Apple cider vinegar

Get rid of pimples overnight
Whether you’re looking forward to a date or a school dance, a pimple can really ruin your day.
While there is no sure-fire way to eliminate pimples overnight, there are several methods you can use to drastically reduce the appearance of acne fast.
Using ice is an easy way to reduce the swelling, inflammation, and redness associated with pimples. Ice also boosts circulation, removes dirt and oil, and tightens pores.
Simply wrap an ice cube in a thin piece of cloth. Press it on the affected area for 5 seconds. Wait a few minutes and repeat.
Cure acne naturally overnight with lemon
Lemon juice helps dry out pimples. Simply apply freshly-squeezed lemon juice to pimples before going to bed OR mix 1 tablespoon lemon juice with 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder and apply mixture to pimples before going to bed. Wash your face in the morning with lukewarm water.
