You’ve probably heard about Rodan + Fields, a skincare company founded by two Stanford-trained doctors, the same two doctors who developed ProActiv. R+F claims that they will redefine the future in regards to anti-aging products. Keep reading to learn more about the company, the products they offer, and what customers think about two of R+F’s most popular skincare regimens.
About Rodan + Fields
Dermatologists Kathy Fields and Katie Rodan founded this up-and-coming skincare company in 2002. In 2003, their famous ProActiv Solution won the Cosmetic Executive Women’s Award “Changing the Direction of the Industry.” Click here for a different opinion on ProActiv.
Kathy and Katie had dream: to make professional, dermatology-based skincare available to everyone without a prescription. But you won’t find R+F products in your local department store. Rodan and Fields follows a direct sell business approach, depending on independent business owners instead of large pharmacies or grocery stores to do the selling. You can always purchase R+F products online if you don’t want to find a store.
R+F products are split into four “regimens,” each containing four different products that work together. REDEFINE is a comprehensive solution that utilizes antioxidants, a high concentration of peptides, and a few other anti-aging ingredients to reduce signs of aging. REDEFINE also slows the development of future aging woes like wrinkles. This set of products promises to minimize pores and fine lines as well as firm up sagging skin. REDEFINE sells for $193.
The REVERSE regimen is aimed towards men and women who want to decrease premature signs of aging caused by the environment. REVERSE promises to fade dark spots, overcome dullness by brightening complexion, and minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Active ingredients include retinol and hydroquinone, a known skin-lightener. REVERSE also exfoliates and includes a product with SPF. REVERSE sells for $179.
The third regimen, UNBLEMISH, helps get rid of current acne and prevents future breakouts by fighting the “acne cycle.” UNBLEMISH unclogs pores and clears the face of blemishes. This set claims to improve complexion and prevent blackheads and pimples. R+F offers an alternative toner for those suffering from PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). If PIH isn’t a problem, the company recommends using their Clarifying Toner along with the rest of the collection. UNBLEMISH, reviewed in more detail below, sells for $171.
If you suffer from sensitive skin, the SOOTHE regimen is your best bet. SOOTHE reduces irritation and redness in just minutes and is great for those suffering from rosacea. In addition, SOOTHE shields the skin against environmental factors that cause irritation, gives your moisture barrier a boost, and improves complexion. SOOTHE sells for $160.
R+F also sells “essentials” like moisturizers, sunscreens, tanning lotion, and vitamins along with microdermabrasion products and peptide brushes.
Product Review: Rodan & Fields UNBLEMISH
This regimen contains a face wash to unclog pores, a toner to fade dark spots, a dual acne treatment to kill bacteria, and a lotion to control oil and protect the skin.
Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash: Sulfur, the active ingredient (3%), is a common choice for fighting acne. Sulfur is also known to irritate and dry out the skin. Despite the fact that this face wash also includes calming chamomile, you shouldn’t use it near your eyes. This may be hard to do when washing the face.
Spot Fading Toner: The active ingredient is hydroquinone (2%), a substance that has been proven to improve discoloration. This non-alcohol toner contains several ingredients known to cause irritation like zinc phenosulfate, lemon, and arnica. Also included is salicylic acid (1%) that is supposed to prepare your skin for absorption of the next product in line.
Dual Intensive Acne Treatment: Using anti-acne staple ingredient benzoyl peroxide (5%), this product claims to kill bacteria and prevent breakouts. The double bottle looks fancy, but studies have shown no benefit to dual packaging. This is a great formula if you can afford the ridiculous price.
Oil Control Lotion with SPF 20: This is basically a daytime moisturizer fit for individuals with normal or oily skin. It’s great that R+F included SPF 20, but this isn’t adequate for many people. The active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium oxide, both gentle. This lotion has a matte finish and goes on smooth (great for under makeup). This lotion is said to speed healing from recent breakouts and hydrate without being greasy.
UNBLEMISH has a 3 out of 5 star rating. The following list provides a summary of what customers thought after using this regimen:
- Great for cystic acne
- Great individuals who suffer acne during adulthood
- Bad customer service
- You don’t need to use much of each solution
- The regimen should last about 4 months
- For the best price, purchase from a consultant
- Some women found that R+F products only made acne worse, even after months of use
Product Review: Rodan & Fields REVERSE
This regimen contains an exfoliating face wash, a brightening toner, a brightening complex, and a sunscreen with 50 SPF.
Deep Exfoliating Wash: this scrubbing cleanser is said to refine complexions that have been dulled by the sun. Unfortunately, this face wash contains peppermint oil, which tends to irritate the skin. Deep Exfoliating Wash also contains lactic acid as an active ingredient, but the concentration is not high enough for it to be effective.
Intensive Brightening Toner: This toner is said to fade dark spots and brighten skin using a combination of licorice, salicylic acid, kojic acid, and antioxidants. That sounds great, but this toner also contains irritants witch hazel and alcohol along with solvents that cause these ingredients to penetrate the skin (which may contribute to irritation). The ingredients used to lighten the skin are promising, but the problematic ingredients, not to mention the price, turn many customers away.
Dual Active Brightening Complex: also utilizing kojic acid and licorice, this complex is said to even out skin tone and enhance the brightening effects provided by the previous product. This complex contains Vitamin C and retinol to fade wrinkles and enhance the skin.
Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen: it’s important to protect your skin from the sun, but doubly so when you’re treating your skin with ingredients like retinol or certain acids. This sunscreen utilizes stabilized avobenzone along with colorless carotenoids (anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory) to protect your skin from the sun. This product, as a part of the REVERSE regimen, enables the other protects to heal without having to deal with new damage. This sunscreen also contains Vitamin E and green tea to prevent further damage and to fight free radicals. Mulberry and licorice extract further brighten the skin.
REVERSE has a 3 out of 5 star rating. The following list provides a summary of what customers thought after using this regimen:
- Helps with melisma
- Contains lots of irritants
- Works best if you stay out of the sun
- About 2 out of 5 women noticed no improvement
- The sunscreen is the best part of this package
- Bad customer service
- Buy from a consultant, not online
Despite the fact that Rodan + Fields utilizes a good business strategy and was created by dermatologists, these products simply aren’t worth the money. You can achieve the same results by using much cheaper skincare products. If you look closely at the ingredients R+F uses, there’s really no reason for the exorbitant pricing. Customer reviews are not inspiring and the products don’t have great ratings, not to mention all the comments about bad customer service. The R+F line isn’t terrible and has helped many individuals, but there are certainly better products – at much lower prices – available. Click here for tips on how to achieve glowing, radiant skin.
