Best Daily Use Facial Sunscreens With & Without Zinc Oxide

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Did you know that dermatologists recommend using a daily sunscreen with a light SPF? Sun exposure can be extremely harmful to the skin. Frequent exposure to UV rays without broad spectrum protection can lead to sunburn, premature signs of aging, and even cancer. Our faces are the most at-risk body part because they are always uncovered. Keep reading to learn why you should use a daily face sunscreen and for two recommendations.

Why Should I use a Daily Face Sunscreen?

It might seem silly to constantly wear sunscreen on your face, but did you know that sunscreen is actually the most effective anti-wrinkle product you can use? Many sunscreens can even be worn beneath your makeup. The most common effects of UV exposure on the face are:

  • Wrinkles
  • Discoloration
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Dryness
  • Texture problems

Simply put, exposure to the sun will make you look older – and nobody wants that! Walk into any pharmacy or convenience store and you’ll find countless brands of sunscreen on display. Be careful, not all sunscreens were created equal. The most important thing to consider when choosing is your skin type. If you are prone to breakouts, the last thing you want is a sunscreen that makes them worse. Likewise, if you have oily skin, you don’t want a brand that makes your face look shiny. Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at 6.58.25 PMProduced by trusted skincare brand Olay, Pro-X Age Repair Lotion is a winner amongst daily face sunscreens. Technically, every sunscreen out there could be marketed as “anti-aging,” but this one is specifically designed for women and men wanting to prevent and lessen the signs of aging. However, the formula is great for all ages.

You will hardly feel this lightweight formula after application. Great for sensitive, normal (not dry or oily), and combination (oily in places, dry in others) skin, Pro-X hydrates while it protects. For those prone to breakouts, rejoice. Pro-X does not cause or irritate acne. Olay’s formula does not have a matte finish, so as you can imagine it may not be suitable for individuals with naturally oily faces. However, it is a great choice if you’ll be wearing it under makeup.

Avobenzone is the main active ingredient. One of the most commonly used sun protectants, it is oil-soluble and absorbs UV rays before they can damage your skin. Anti-aging ingredients like niacinamide, Vitamin E, and green tea make this product more than just your average sunscreen. Pro-X is fragrance-free and costs just under $30 on Amazon (it may be pricier depending on where you shop).

What did customers think?

Pro-X has an overall rating of 4/5. The most common reviews stated that this moisturizer made skin feel smooth and improved tone and texture. Some buyers complained of a white residue, but letting the sunscreen sit for a few minutes before applying makeup seems to solve the problem. Customers love that this product doesn’t feel like a sunscreen and isn’t greasy. One woman praised Pro-X for preventing her melisma spots from reappearing or getting darker

Those with dry and/or sensitive skin also enjoyed this product, claiming that it was a great hydrator and didn’t irritate. In addition, makeup stayed intact throughout the day when applied over Pro-X.

The most common complaint was the price.

Resist Super-Light Daily Defense with SPF 30

Sold by Paula’s Choice, this daily sunscreen was designed for those with combination skin or oily skin who want to prevent or fight signs of aging. It is also appropriate for those with sensitive skin and conditions like rosacea. Resist Super-Light Daily Defense claims to improve the following problems:

resistThis lotion is slightly tinted to avoid giving your face a white cast. The formula is mineral-based and provides gentle protection from the sun, preventing discoloration. But it does more than that! Resist Super-Light also fortifies your skin with antioxidants and repairs and stimulates the production of collagen. Like the previous product, this moisturizer is perfect for wearing under your makeup. Resist Super-Light has a matte finish, making it perfect for those with oily skin.

The UV-protecting ingredient in this formula is zinc oxide, a powdered mineral that scatters and absorbs UV rays while sitting on your skin. As a bonus, it won’t trigger breakouts. Resist Super-Light is lightweight, fragrance free, and will not irritate the eyes. You can purchase this moisturizer from Amazon for just under $30. A sample bottle is available on the Paula’s Choice website for just $1.00.

What did customers think?

Also boasting a 4/5 rating, Resist Super-Light has great reviews saying things such as:

  • Gives skin a healthy glow without looking shiny
  • Improves complexion
  • Good for dry skin as well as oily skin
  • Hydrates
  • Helps fight acne

The most common complaint was that this product has an odd, thick texture.

Since both daily face sunscreens are the same price and both can be worn effectively under makeup, the deciding factor is whether or not you have oily skin. For dual hydration and UV protection, you can’t go wrong with Olay’s product. If you have dry skin and are looking to hydrate while protecting from the sun, choose Pro-X.

If you’re looking for a chemical-free formula, you’re safe with Resist Super-Light. Definitely choose this brand if you have oily skin and/or acne. In addition, it seems that the Paula’s Choice formula is more focused on anti-aging (because it stimulates collagen production) than is Olay’s product.

Remember, if you are spending a day at the beach or playing in the sun, you might need to use sunscreen with a higher SPF than your daily product offers – especially if you have light skin. In addition, make sure to use a waterproof sunscreen if you’ll be swimming and to reapply the lotion every few hours to fully protect yourself from the sun. It’s also vital that you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays. Click here to learn about sunscreen for babies.
